Jesus not only atoned for our sin's filth (covered), but He appeased the Father's wrath (smothered). This is what it means when the Bible says, "He Himself is the propitiation for our sins" (I John 2:2), how He covered us with His sinless life and smothered the wrath of God by becoming sin in His death. "For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him" (II Corinthians 5:21).
