the THOUGHTS of the EYES

Have you ever looked into the eyes of someone and saw nothing? Not even hurting eyes or weeping eyes, but dark eyes. Eyes can say so much, yet it's hard to translate the thoughts of some eyes because you're only human. And darkness isn't human, it's inhumane.

How can nothing say so much?

However, and although nothingness is hard to define, you still know something abysmal has been opened to you, so you wait until the thoughts of the eyes manifest into the words of the tongue. They are related and synchronized to the same language. The eyes speak light and the tongue tells you whether it is absent or present.

"The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness" (Matthew 6: 22-23).

Wow! "If the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness?" I'd say great enough for there to be an absence of light throughout the entire body, smothering the heart, and leaking darkness out onto the tongue. Truly the state of man's soul is on his lips.

"For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks" (Matthew 12:34).

I don't naturally feel uncomfortable around too many things and I am usually confidently poised around almost anything. But around some eyes, I feel the exuding of darkness. Their presence--absence of light--is heavy. And there need not be any words from the heart to hear the language of the eyes. Screaming. Jeering. Agitated. Spiritually blank.

I know what I know.  I feel what I feel. And I see what I see.  And that is why this Bible verse is for me:

"For you are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.  They are of the world.  Therefore they speak as of the world, and the world hears them.  We are of God.  He who knows God hears us; he who's not of God does not hear us.  By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error" (I John 4:4-6).
