What feels uncontrolled to us is never uncontrolled by God. Evil may be permitted for a season, but it is never sovereign; God determines its reach and its expiration. When you have Jesus Christ in your heart, it is possible to live in the land of affliction and not become a prisoner of it. As long as Christ has us here as the salt of the earth, we need to delay the decay of the day by being in the Way. Because whatever we permit, we promote. "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men" (Matthew 5:13).

The only way for God to disown our sin from us is if we first own our sin before Him. "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).
God allows trouble to touch our lives, not so that we lose faith, but so that we use faith. So like Job, let us say, "The Lord gives and the Lord takes, blessed be the name of the Lord" (Job 1:21).

It's true, you never really know what you've got until it's gone. But also, in some situations, it takes being gone to realize what you've got. Being back in Florida with my family for the first time in 6 years has taught me a humbling lesson about the void that I left my parents with since I've been gone. Other family members, who are here with us now, (and were here in years past) have told me privately how both my mother and my father have a different type of vacation relief this time around. You really can't walk a few feet in Disney World without seeing people taking photographs. Most of those photo op's involve posing in front of a scenic background or vibrant foreground. Whether it's a giant castle behind you or Minnie Mouse next to you, there is just something "magical" about capturing the moment....or is it more about capturing our own likeness? I'm sorry, this is just how my mind works these days! Perhaps we love seeing ourselves in a picture because deep down inside we are reminiscing about that which is eternal.
